The Nokia 7750 Service Router Extended Services Appliance (ESA) extends the
level of networking functionality and generalized processing for IP/MPLS routing
applications for integrated services on the Nokia 7750 Service Router (SR).
Key Features and Benefits of the Nokia 7750
Virtual machine-based design
The Nokia ESA is specialized hardware that hosts ESA virtual machines (ESA-VMs). Each ESA-VM is configured as an integrated service type. The ESA VM extends the proven Integrated Services Adapter (ISA) system architecture and related Control Processor Module (CPM) functions on the Nokia 7750 SR system to include ESA-VM-based virtual ISA (v-ISA) functionality. A v-ISA is an ESA-VM configured as an integrated service type.
An ESA is associated with a particular system host port, where each ESA-VM is also configured with the required type and size (i.e., number of CPU cores and memory). After the ESA is connected to the properly configured port, the ESA hardware and hypervisor is booted by the 7750 SR CPM, and available ESA resources are discovered by the 7750 SR.
As part of a 7750 SR system, the ESA does not require standalone orchestration, provisioning or upgrading.
Connectivity with the Nokia 7750 SR
The Nokia ESA receives traffic from the Nokia 7750 SR system, similar to a traditional ISA. Traffic is forwarded to the ESA based on the Nokia SR OS service configuration, processed by the ESA-VM, and returned to the 7750 SR. Nokia 7750 SR ports speeds of 100G, 40G, 25G, or 10G can connect to an ESA, which can support either one or multiple ESA-VMs. This functionality creates a versatile solution for 7750 SR deployments, featuring configurable ESA-VM functions. The resulting flexibility maximizes 7750 SR assets and service revenue by allocating compute functions to VMs as needed, without relying on the complex orchestration systems found in fully virtualized environments.
For service processing scale-out versatility, ESAs can be stacked, with up to 16 per 7750 SR and multiple ESA connections per 7750 SR line card. For scale-in versatility, up to four VMs per ESA can be used where low-capacity granularity of v-ISA applications is required.
Nokia 7750 SR system support
The Nokia ESA is supported on most Nokia FP4- and FP5-based 7750 SR line cards and system types. It is directly connected to the 7750 SR at interface speeds of up to 100G, using QSFP optics in the 7750 SR system and on the ESA’s network interface card (NIC). For 40G ports, QSFP+ optics are used in both the 7750 SR system and the ESA. For 25G and 10G speeds, a QSFP28 to SFP28/SFP+ adapter is used, along with the associated optics, on both the 7750 SR and the ESA.
Available in 100G-2 and 400G variants, the Nokia ESA provides specialized packet processing for deeper levels of application functionality and intelligence to support next-generation value added services in the Nokia Service Router Operating System (SR OS). The Nokia 7750 SR forwards traffic from a selected port to the ESA, relieving high-performance 7750 SR slots from the need to host service processing. The resources of the ESA extend the service processing function of the Nokia 7750 SR for significantly greater processing scale.
