Calix XG801 vs. XG1601: XGS-PON Upgrades & Surplus Equipment Value
As broadband providers continue expanding XGS-PON networks, increasing subscriber density and looking for more efficiency from existing infrastructure, equipment choices within the Calix E7-2 platform are evolving. One transition we are seeing is increased adoption of the Calix XG1601 in networks that have traditionally deployed the XG801.
Does that mean the XG1601 simply replaces the XG801? Not exactly.
The XG1601 provides significantly greater XGS-PON density and improved efficiency, but the XG801 remains a capable and useful line card. In fact, Calix continues to list both the XG801 and XG1601 as supported E7-2 line cards.
For network operators, that creates two opportunities:
1. Modernize portions of the network where greater capacity is needed.
2. Recover value from the XG801 cards and other equipment displaced by those upgrades.

What Is the Calix XG801?
The Calix E7-2 XG801, commonly associated with part number 100-05529, is a high-capacity XGS-PON/GPON line card designed for the Calix AXOS E7-2 platform.
Calix introduced the XG801 to help broadband service providers deploy XGS-PON while also supporting high-capacity 100G transport in temperature-hardened environments such as outside-plant cabinets.
The XG801 provides:
- 8 XGS-PON/GPON OLT interfaces
- 4 SFP+ interfaces supporting applications such as point-to-point Ethernet or 10G transport
- 2 high-capacity QSFP-DD interfaces
- Support for temperature-hardened E7-2 deployments
- Integration into the Calix AXOS architecture
The additional SFP+ interfaces can make the XG801 particularly useful in configurations requiring more Ethernet connectivity in addition to PON services. Calix describes the card as providing eight XGS-PON/GPON OLT ports plus four additional 10GE SFP+ sockets.

What Is the Calix XG1601?
The Calix E7-2 XG1601, commonly associated with part number 100-05770, represents the next step in high-density XGS-PON deployment within the E7-2 platform.
Calix launched the XG1601 in November 2023 with a major emphasis on increasing subscriber density while reducing the amount of power, space and supporting infrastructure required per subscriber.
The XG1601 configuration includes:
- 8 XGS-DD/MPM optical interface positions
- Support for double-density XGS-PON optics
- Up to 16 XGS-PON interfaces, 2 SFP+ interfaces, 2 QSFP-DD interfaces
- GPON and XGS-PON deployment flexibility
- Temperature-hardened E7-2 operation
Using double-density optics, providers can support significantly more XGS-PON interfaces from the same E7-2 footprint. Calix specifically highlights the XG1601’s ability to deliver double-density XGS-PON while reducing power requirements per port by as much as 50 percent.
The key advantage of the Calix XG1601 is density.

Does the XG1601 Replace the XG801?
It is better to describe the XG1601 as a higher-density evolution and upgrade option, rather than a universal one-for-one replacement for the XG801. For an operator primarily concerned with adding XGS-PON subscribers, the XG1601 can offer a compelling upgrade path. However, the decision depends on how the XG801 is being used. An XG801 deployment making use of all four SFP+ interfaces, for example, should be reviewed carefully because the XG1601 provides only two. Optics, AXOS software requirements, subscriber configuration, transport architecture and existing GPON/XGS PON deployment should all be evaluated before treating the XG1601 as a substitute. Why Are Operators Moving Toward Higher-Density XGS-PON Cards?
There are several potential reasons.
The most obvious is capacity.
Double-density XGS-PON allows a broadband provider to serve additional subscribers from the same E7-2 footprint without necessarily installing another OLT chassis.
For central offices, huts and outside-plant cabinets where rack space is limited, that can be particularly valuable.

Calix states that the XG1601 can reduce power consumption per port by up to 50 percent compared with previous solutions.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the entire card consumes half the power of an XG801. Rather, the increased density allows the operator to support considerably more PON capacity relative to the power being consumed.
Adding another chassis involves more than purchasing another chassis. It can require:
- Additional rack space
- Power
- Cooling
- Cabling
- Optics
- Engineering
- Installation labor
- Ongoing maintenance
Increasing density within equipment already deployed can sometimes avoid or delay those costs.
Calix also highlights backward ONT compatibility as an advantage of the XG1601 architecture, allowing providers to modernize parts of the network without automatically requiring unnecessary subscriber-premise ONT replacements.
Avoiding thousands of potential truck rolls can have a meaningful impact on network upgrade economics.
What Happens to the XG801 Cards That Come Out?
This is where network modernization and telecom asset recovery should become part of the same conversation. When an operator replaces an XG801 with an XG1601, the XG801 may no longer be needed in that particular network.That does not mean it no longer has value. Other network operators may still:
- Need replacements for failed equipment
- Maintain networks where changing architectures isn’t economically justified
- Prefer to extend the life of existing infrastructure
- Operate large installed bases of Calix E7-2 equipment
- Need XG801 cards for network expansion
- Require emergency spares
As a result, equipment removed during an upgrade can potentially become a recoverable asset rather than stranded inventory.
